Ethnography
The ethnography collection consists of more than 3300 catalogued pieces dated between late 19th century and early 21st century. It is composed by pieces from the five continents as well as private donations. Several cultural groups are therefore represented.
One of the focal points of this collection is the Portuguese rural world, in which the yokes from late 21st century have great prominence. Important pieces were also collected in Timor during the 20th century, and in Papua New Guinea in the transition from the 19th to the 20th century.
One of the latest collections to join the MHNC-UP, in 2017, was the João Pedro Galhano Alves collection. It is the result of field work conducted in Niger, India, and North-eastern Portugal, focusing on the interaction between humans and large predators.
During this restructuring phase of the MHNC-UP, the treatment, conservation, and expansion of this collection is being prioritised. This will help to ensure that it is available both to the public and to support research and academic projects.
