Fish

The Museum's fish collection (MHNCUP / ICT) consists of approximately 450 specimens collected between the late 19th century and the 1980s. These are mostly from Portugal (76%), although there are also specimens from other locations, namely Cape Verde and Mozambique. The majority of the Portuguese specimens were collected by Augusto Nobre and Isaac Newton in the early 20th century. This collection is preserved in liquid media (48%) or naturalized (49%), with a residual number of osteological preparations. About 230 species of fish, mostly of Atlantic origin, are present in this collection. Some of these specimens are representative of critically endangered species according to the IUCN.

This collection is being digitized and georeferenced so it can soon be published in GBIF, making it available to the academic and scientific community.
