Herbarium PO - Xylarium

The collection of wood samples (registered in the Index Xylariorum with the international acronym "PO”) includes 2737 specimens representing 1280 taxa from Portugal (Mainland and Islands), Africa (Angola, Mozambique, S. Tomé), Europe, Asia (Timor), and America (Brazil).

This xylarium, whose origin dates back to the 19th century, extends to the vouchers published in the 21st century and includes fossil and archaeological woods from mainland Portugal. The key names in these collections are Américo Pires de Lima, Arnaldo Rozeira, and Joaquim Santos Júnior. More recently, as a result of incorporations of the MHNC-UP, new collections connected to doctorates and paleobiological studies have emerged. The main lines of work associated to the xylarium include taxonomic and anatomical plant studies and the history of science related to ongoing research and academic projects.

The collection can be found in various formats: portions of trunks, sectioned branches, pieces carved in the shape of books, or plates and boards displaying various types of cuts (transversal, diagonal, longitudinal). This collection also specializes in trees and shrubs, with corresponding microscope slides (about a thousand specimens). The most recent specimens are disinfected by anoxia and remain useful for molecular studies. Part of this collection has a digital inventory and has been photographed and georeferenced. The entire collection is available for consultation upon request.
