“Instituto de Botânica
Gonçalo Sampaio” Archive

The archive's collection includes the scientific correspondence of numerous national and foreign botanists and scientists, world-renowned and participants in the publication of Portuguese Floras (about 2,000 documents).

Also included in this collection are hundreds of manuscripts on botanical topics (dichotomous keys, proofs, catalogs, specimen notes, drawings, field notebooks, photos of corresponding botanists, complete with inscriptions, and widely annotated books and Floras). Also part of the Archive are hundreds of images, photographed and developed in various formats (ranging from the end of the 19th century to the 20th century). The main features of the collection are the archives of Gonçalo Sampaio and Arnaldo Rozeira, as well as documentation by Américo Pires de Lima and António Machado.

There are also centers of botanical scientific illustration and typographic plates, these last ones associated with Iconographies or scientific publications by professors and researchers at the University, as well as a library map with various sizes and typographies. More recently, as a result of incorporations of the MHNC-UP, collections of photography and documentation by botanists Arnaldo Rozeira and António Machado were included in this archive.

The main lines of work associated to this collection include taxonomic study, maintenance and conservation of collections and the history of science in connection with research and academic projects.

All specimens are disinfected by anoxia. The collection is organized in author folders, with quotas, and although it still lacks detailed inventory and digitization, the file is available for consultation upon request.
