Plant Data

Until June 27, the Hall of Biodiversity will host the project Plant Data, by Yota Ayaan in collaboration with Mariana Sottomayor and Stefaan Van Leuven.

Plant Data is a project at the intersection of art and science that interprets data from plants into sound. The artwork consists of dozens of ash trees and a multi-channel speaker system installed throughout the Galeria da Biodiversidade. The space hums with a twenty-four hour sound work, based on numerical data obtained from the ‘acoustic emissions’, or AEs, of the ash tree recorded by a latest generation acquisition system in the laboratory of Kathy Steppe at the University of Ghent.
