EXPOSIÇÃO SERPENTES – UMA RELAÇÃO DE AMOR E MEDO COM A HUMANIDADE

De 8 de novembro de 2023 a 11 de fevereiro de 2024, o Museu de História Natural e da Ciência da Universidade do Porto acolhe, no seu Polo Central, a exposição Serpentes – Uma Relação de Amor e Medo com a Humanidade, organizada pelo Laboratório de Bioquímica Computacional do LAQV-Requimte e da Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade do Porto (FCUP).
Nesta exposição, através da qual se pretende abordar o valor ecológico das serpentes e a importância dos venenos que produzem para a industria farmacêutica, estarão representadas espécies presentes em quatro continentes: Ásia, África, América e Europa, incluindo algumas comuns em Portugal. Serão apresentadas imagens ilustrativas da estrutura molecular dos venenos de diferentes espécies de serpentes, fotografias deste grupo de animais pela lente do fotógrafo indiano Rupankar Bhattacharjee, e ilustrações alusivas à evolução convergente da autoria de Joaquim Filipe Faria, pintor e investigador da FCUP. Serão ainda expostos exemplares taxidermizados de serpentes provenientes da coleção de répteis do MHNC-UP.
Uma das fontes de inspiração para esta exposição é o projeto Murderous Venom, no âmbito do qual investigadores do LAQV-REQUIMTE e FCUP têm vindo a desenvolver antídotos inovadores e de baixo custo para o envenenamento por mordidas de serpentes, para distribuição maioritariamente pelas comunidades rurais de África e da Ásia.

From November 8, 2023 to February 11, 2024, the Natural History and Science Museum of the University of Porto hosts, in its Core Pole, the exhibition Snakes – A Relationship of Love and Fear with Humanity, organized by the Computational Biochemistry Laboratory at LAQV-Requimte and the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP).
Aiming to address the ecological value of snakes and the importance of the venoms they produce for the pharmaceutical industry, this exhibition highlights species present in four continents: Asia, Africa, America and Europe, including some which are common in Portugal. It brings us a set of illustrative images of the molecular structure of the venoms of different species of snakes, photographs of this group of animals through the lens of Indian photographer Rupankar Bhattacharjee, and illustrations depicting convergent evolution by Joaquim Filipe Faria, painter and researcher at FCUP. Taxidermized specimens of snakes from the MHNC-UP’s reptile collection will also be on display.
This exhibition finds inspiration in projects such as the Murderous Venom project, within the scope of which researchers from LAQV-REQUIMTE and FCUP have been developing innovative and low-cost antidotes for snake bite envenoming, for distribution mostly by rural communities in Africa and Asia.
