De 4 a 30 de junho de 2024, o Museu de História Natural e da Ciência da Universidade do Porto acolhe, na Galeria da Biodiversidade – Centro Ciência Viva, a exposição Rewilding Time, a última obra do projeto artístico Eternal Forest – que tem como objetivo a criação de mil santuários florestais protegidos durante mil anos – da artista e poeta Evgenia Emets.
Rewilding Time dá a conhecer a reflexão de uma artista sobre os ecossistemas florestais, a sua biodiversidade, complexidade, aptidão e o valor intrínseco da natureza. A exposição convida-nos a contemplar a história de uma floresta: desde o seu intricado início até ao seu desenvolvimento num ecossistema bem estabelecido, como uma floresta antiga.
Atualmente, a integridade fundamental da floresta está ameaçada em todo o mundo: restam apenas algumas florestas antigas. Estes ecossistemas são cada vez mais escassos, especialmente em Portugal, onde as florestas têm um longo histórico de alteração e fragmentação. Aqui, as pequenas áreas de habitats naturais resistem, sustentando ecossistemas prósperos, e assegurando a sobrevivência de espécies-chave de plantas e animais que podem estar à beira da extinção.Parte superior do formulário
Em Rewilding Time, a complexidade e a interconetividade da floresta são reveladas através da investigação de um habitat específico: os carvalhais galaico-portugueses, caracterizados por espécies como Quercus orocantabrica e Quercus pyrenaica. Este é um habitat prioritário para o lobo ibérico, que desempenha um papel crucial na saúde e equilíbrio do ecossistema. Assim, a floresta é retratada como o produto de um processo ecológico contínuo, marcado por uma complexidade crescente e gradual. Explorando estas perspetivas, Rewilding Time estende-se por vários espaços: interligando o Jardim Botânico da Universidade do Porto, duas áreas florestais protegidas – Corno do Bico e Parque Nacional da Peneda Gerês – e a Galeria da Biodiversidade – Centro Ciência Viva. No Jardim Botânico será apresentado um percurso artístico específico e uma experiência baseada na pesquisa artística nas áreas florestais protegidas. Por sua vez, a instalação na Galeria da Biodiversidade, oferece uma compreensão mais profunda da interação entre os organimos que habitam a floresta, através de um filme criado em colaboração com Tiago Lobo, bem como de mapeamentos e documentos oficiais de conservação da natureza. No seu conjunto, Rewilding Time convida-nos a abordar o restauro e proteção das florestas com reverência, incentivando a reflexão sobre como podemos viver em reciprocidade com estes ecossistemas.
Rewilding Time foi desenvolvido em colaboração com investigadores do Museu de História Natural e da Ciência da Universidade do Porto, em particular do Jardim Botânico da Universidade do Porto, e do BIOPOLIS-CIBIO, através de uma prática multidisciplinar orientada pela investigação científica mais recente em torno da recuperação e proteção de ecossistemas.

No mesmo dia, pelas 16h30, a artista promoverá também uma visita orientada à exposição Rewilding Time, patente na Galeria da Biodiversidade – Centro Ciência Viva.

From the 4th to the 30th of June, the Natural History and Science Museum of the University of Porto hosts, in the Hall of Biodiversity – Ciência Viva Center the exhibition Rewilding Time, the latest addition to the ongoing artistic project Eternal Forest – creating 1,000 forest sanctuaries protected for 1,000 years – by artist and poet Evgenia Emets.
Rewilding Time shows an artist’s reflection on the forest ecosystems, their biodiversity, complexity, aptitude, and the intrinsic value of the wild. The exhibition invites us to contemplate the story of a forest: from its intricate beginnings to its growth into a well-established ecosystem as an old-growth forest.
Today, the fundamental integrity of forests is under threat worldwide. There are only a few old-growth forests left, and they are increasingly scarce, especially in Portugal, where these ecosystems have a long history of alteration and fragmentation. Here, the small pockets of natural habitats struggle to support flourishing ecosystems, ensuring the survival of key and threatened plant and animal species that may reach the verge of extinction.
In Rewilding Time, the complexity and interconnectivity of the forest are revealed through an investigation of one particular habitat: the Galician-Portuguese oak woods, characterized by species such as Quercus orocantabrica and Quercus pyrenaica. This is a priority habitat for the Iberian wolf, which plays a crucial role in the health and equilibrium of the ecosystem. Thus, the forest is portrayed as an ongoing ecological process, marked by increasing and gradual complexity.
Exploring these perspectives, Rewilding Time spans several spaces: interconnecting the Botanical Garden of the University of Porto, two protected forest areas – Corno do Bico and Peneda Gerês National Park – and the Hall of Biodiversity. The Botanical Garden features a site-specific art trail and experience, based on artistic research in the protected forest areas. The installation at the Hall of Biodiversity, in turn, offers a deeper understanding of the interplay of forest organisms through a film created in collaboration with Tiago Lobo, along with mappings and official nature conservation documents. As a whole, Rewilding Time invites us to approach forest restoration and protection from a place of reverence, encouraging reflection on how we can live in reciprocity with the forest.
Rewilding Time was developed in collaboration with scientists and researchers from the Natural History and Science Museum of the University of Porto, in particular the Botanical Garden of the University of Porto, and BIOPOLIS-CIBIO forming a multidisciplinary practice, driven by recent scientific research in ecosystem restoration and protection.

On this very same day, the artist will also guide a tour to the exhibition Rewilding Time, on display at the Hall of Biodiversity – Ciência Viva Center, starting at 16h30.
